The brief

Most visitors come to buy, so the newest pieces, their prices and how many are left must show straight away. The studio sells every shape in six glazes that mix, and the site has to make that easy to see. It also has to fill wheel classes, answer shipping, breakage and care questions before people order, and give local visitors the opening hours and address.

Design decisions

  • The whole page is a tile wall: every block snaps to square cells with light grout between them, like a tiled floor. The name Tessel comes from tessellation.
  • The colours are the studio's six glazes, used as full tiles: cobalt, celadon, ochre, persimmon, shino pink and tenmoku, with navy ink in place of black.
  • Some tiles carry one simple shape, such as a quarter circle, a plate or an arch, so the wall feels hand-set without more photos.
  • Bricolage Grotesque, set heavy and tight, gives the headlines character. Martian Mono handles the small print: prices, dates, glaze codes and labels.
  • The glazes are shown as test tiles, half bare clay and half glazed, the way potters test a glaze before it goes on a pot.
  • On phones the wall drops to four columns: the headline tile fills the screen, products sit two to a row and the category tabs scroll inside their own row.

What we built

  • Header with the four-tile logo, the date the next kiln opens, search and a bag button.
  • Hero tile wall: a cobalt headline tile with the six glaze chips, a shop button and a class link, a “new this kiln” product tile, shape tiles and two photos.
  • The glazes: six test tiles with finish, a short note, piece counts and “from” prices.
  • Shop: category tabs, product tiles with glaze dots, prices and “New” or “2 left” badges, plus a build-a-set tile and a gift card tile.
  • Workshops: three dated classes with a coloured date tile, price, seats left and a booking button.
  • The studio: four steps from throwing to glaze firing, each on its own tile.
  • Shipping, breakage, care and returns notes, a visit tile with hours and address, a newsletter sign-up, and a footer that spells the name in six glaze tiles.
